Carbonite.com

Hey, has anyone heard of this? Someone mentioned it to me, for saving your computer hard drive. It's $50/year and you never have to do anything, they encrypt all the data on your hard drive and save it in case of failure. Has anyone used something like this? Do you think it's worth it? Leave comments please!!

I did a quick look into it and found a lot of people unhappy. Their service claims to be unlimited but I have seen many complains of them dropping people when they use "more than the average user". I also saw claims of hard to reach and poor customer service. My big problems would be having someone else have all my personal data. I'd rather burn several DVD backups and put them in a safety deposit box at a bank. Add an external hard drive that you can take with you in an emergency (like Ike) and you're pretty covered without having to deal with an outside company like that.

Try http://www.myotherdrive.com for online backup. This company blends both backup and file sharing into one service. Their online backup includes unattended backup operation and 128-bit encryption.

And their file sharing is by far the most advanced on the Internet. They support both public and private file sharing. Their private file sharing allows you to control who can view your shared files.

No file size limits, no expiration of files - just a great service all around.
